My definition of a true friendship is someone who is loyal, caring, understanding, giving, and who is willing to listen and commuicate with you on many things in life.  I believe that if you can find either all these qualities in a person or some of them that  you can have a true friendship with someone.  A true friendship is also someone you can trust with your most inner thoughts with, and were you can open up your heart and know that they will give a honest opioion that you can accept it or not. True friends are very hard to come by, but when you recognize someone as being a true friend then you should do you best to hold on to them. Just because someone has been in your life for a long amount of time does not necessarily mean that they are a true friend. Someone who is accepting of your past and that believes in your future will create a positive presence in your life. A true friend will never try to change you because they will love the real you, unless they notice that you aren't acting as yourself.  A true friend will never be envious of your accomplishments, and will never try to copy your style, which is also an indication of envy. A true friend will be there for you through thick and thin, even when they know that you are wrong, they will stick with you until you are able to make things right. A true friend will push you towards greatness, and not pull you away from it. Most of all a true friend will love you unconditionally, with no strings attached. Who are your true friends? The first brush with friendship happens soon after birth. Around the age of four or five, children begin to grasp the concept of friendship. They seek companionship of other children. They learn interpersonal skills like communication, sharing, exchange, and interaction to help them blend in social groups. Parents and teachers play an important role in teaching children how to make friends. Making friends is an important activity for the child's psychological development. As the child grows, her understanding about friendship goes through a metamorphosis. She learns to connect with people who share similar values and beliefs. Hence, as her views change, so do her friends. different shades of friendship? Is friendship necessary for human existence? Can we find a definition where one size fits all? In my search for a definition of friendship, I turned to a collection of the best friendship quotations. One definition was by the oft-quoted Kahlil Gibran. The Lebanese-American poet wrote, "Your friend is your needs answered." Think about it. A friend fills the void in your life. From sharing funny moments during a boring history lecture, to listening to you cry your heart out when you break up with your sweetheart, to sharing a drink following success or failure, a friend is always around. Have you ever heard the theme song of the popular TV sitcom, Friends? The song captured the essence of friendship. "I'll be there for you," is an unspoken promise between true friends.
